"Arawak"
My family visited the island of Aruba for a Christmas vacation
12 years ago. We visited the only site of any archeological significance,
a cave with pictographs from the now nearly extinct Arawak tribe.
I have always been drawn by historical perspectives that are not
well addressed like ethnic extinction and took some pictures of
the cave drawings. It was not until many years later that I dug
up the pictures, converted them into linocut prints and began to
print them on surfaces. At the same time a neighbor gave me a large
set of fine wood veneers. I immediately began to print the Arawak
signs on the wood and added paint, wax, and other materials.. I
hope people enjoy the imagery and see the symbolism and beauty
of these ancient images.
