"Charcoal
Drawings"
This series is made with images from earlier intaglio prints chopped
up and collaged into the piece. The symbols are personal
calligraphic representations made while listening to various forms
of music, including symphonic, tribal and folk forms.
Goes back to my graduate school days +25 yrs ago, when
I was influenced by my Japanese language studies and the kanji's
(Japanese alphabet) visual impact on me as a written system of
communication. Having always been very interested in music
of all kinds (I play the piano) I decided to create my own visual
system of musical interpretation. One mind you, that was
not meant to be ‘readable and playable’, but rather
enjoyed visually. The drawings represent a visualization
of the energy of the musical sounds themselves.
