“THE LESSON”

The Time:  Any Girl’s Adolescence
The Place: Middle School

The Lesson:  That the size of her breasts, whether she buys it or not, are an important issue of being feminine in our culture and that she will continue to be reminded of this for the rest of her life.  That her breasts will be fair game for criticism and analysis by her peers, both female and male.  That her breasts will play a part in her appearance’s making a first impression on many occasions, and that her physical beauty will be judged, in part, by the perceived size and shape of them.  That her male peers especially will be taught that they have an inherited right to an opinion of her breasts and a right to share this opinion openly.  This culture considers that a ‘healthy, red-blooded male attitude’,  That she will not have the same right to openly analyze and criticize her male peer’s anatomy; that is threatening and ‘unbecoming’ of her.  That the reinforcement of this attitude by the fashion industry (in surveys of over 400 top models, 85% admitted to having had breast enlargement) to fulfill their need to have ‘perfect’ breasts; this is not without risk.  The rewards are monumental:  ownership of ‘female beauty’ as defined by our culture, power, attention and control.  Conversely, the incident of male models seeking enlargement of sexual body parts is a non-issue and for all intents and purposes, non-existent.”
