"Tar Paper"
The
Tar Paper series, named after the common material used as a base
throughout, is a group of pictographic portraits of ancient and
sacred deities and concepts. They range from goddesses of water,
earth, air and fire to circadian rhythm and the earth seen as our
first teacher. Ms. Underwood’s deep concern for human spirituality
is evident not only in the subject matter, but the choice and handling
of materials as well. Rich layers of paint, those water based and
not, cloak surfaces smooth and textured alike. Used cloths still
smelling of printer’s ink encase cryptic forms that tug at
our collective unconscious. Brightly colored three dimensional
lines eek out signs and symbols of long forgotten meaning.
