ABOUT THE ARTIST
Patricia Underwood is a Washington based mixed media artist / printmaker who uses materials and symbols in sophisticated and subtle ways. Her work has been described as evocative, complex and richly textured. Content encompasses nature, human spirituality and healing. After studying the Japanese language, she began to interpret music (a universal language) through her own visual calligraphy, which finds it’s way into almost all of her work.
Bodies of work have included a series of symbolic lullabies, pictographic portraits and “Bimbos and Goddesses”, a series of etchings pairing Neolithic and contemporary images of women. “Signs of Life” sprang from depiction of the human soul in symbols, undertaken for a collaborative book of prints. The artist’s version now resides in the Artist’s Book Collection of the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington, DC. “Healing Shields” takes on issues such as domestic violence, globalization and racism, to name a few. “Nine Children” addresses the price going to war exacts upon innocent victims. The Arawak series studies the only visual traces left of the near extinct America tribe for which it is named. The “Etudes”series incorporates her own visual calligraphy with classical violin scores. “At the Table” series uses her signature symbols to explore the simple yet very complex act of coming ‘to the table’ to be fed.
Her latest body of work studies ancient trees and their collective way of existing for many millienia and will be shown in April 2021 at The Athenaeum, Alexandria VA. (https://www.nvfaa.org/)
She has exhibited nationally and internationally, at venues including the Corcoran Museum and two solo shows in Warsaw in 2007. Her work is included in numerous private collections including the Artist's Book Collection of the National Museum for Women in the Arts, Washington, DC. and several other institutional collections.
Patricia Underwood obtained her BFA from Miami University, Oxford, OH, and her MFA from Washington University, St Louis, MO. She has taught drawing, printmaking, visual foundations and color theory at several schools, including the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, MD. Her studio/home is located in Castleton, VA. She is represented by Haley Fine Art, Sperryville, VA
