ARAWAK

My family traveled to the island of Aruba 14 years ago and while there we visited the only site of any archeological significance, a cave with pictographs from the now nearly extinct Arawak tribe. I have always been drawn to historical perspectives that are not well documented, like ethnic extinction, and I took pictures of the cave drawings. Many years later I dug up the pictures and was struck by the symbolism and beauty of these ancient images. Around the same time a friend gave me a large set of fine wood veneers. I immediately began to print lino-cuts of the Arawak signs onto the wood and added paint, wax, and glazes.
